about

In early 2004 the worlds tallest freestanding fiddler Oliver Schroer came up with a musical concept that he would write intricate fiddle orchestra tunes for young musicians to stimulate their interest and drive their fiddling passion. He wrote many tunes specifically for the kids and arranged multiple harmonies and counter melodies that could be played by multiple groups in British Columbia. These groups were primarily based out of the Sunshine Coast, Smithers, Victoria and Vancouver.

Oliver arranged intricate melodies, counter melodies and harmonies to capture and maintain the musical fire within the youth. Oliver said “I realized I could use many of my experimental violin techniques I had evolved over the years to good musical effect. I wanted to stretch out the boundaries of what a group of kids can do. So I composed stuff that showcases funky ensemble playing and alternative techniques, while never losing sight of a good strong melody “ …and then he selected and encouraged the hottest fiddlers to form a new group with the name Twisted String. The TS groups from the different corners of British Columbia flourished under this fertile musical concept and as they worked hard at learning the repertoires and parts they would often travel across the province to meet at gigs and festivals around BC where “Oli jams” and concerts would immediately ensue. One special gathering culminated when TS members, new and old, traveled en masse to Toronto for the Olifiddle 2 concerts to join Oliver, his friends and fans for two sold out performances at Hugh’s Room. Tunes and emotions flowed freely for the better part of a week…...

After Oliver left his tour of this planet the TS never skipped a beat, with the groups around BC digging in harder with more gigs, more tunes and new recruits. This continued energy was clearly in part due to Oliver having the foresight to recruit three very special protégé’s to carry on Oliver’s mentorship and spirit with the current and future TS members through their musical tour de force of Oli tunes. Chelsea Sleep, Emilyn Stam and Leah Christian are well known in their broad musical communities however they hold a very particularly special place in the hearts of the Twisted String family.
